Removal
CAUTION:

Inspect the steering gear boot, replace if damaged.

NOTES:
  • This procedure contains some variation in the illustration depending on the vehicle specification, but essential information is always correct.

  • This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift. For additional information, refer to: Lifting (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation).
  2. Remove the tie rod end. For additional information, refer to: Tie Rod End (211-03 Steering Linkage, Removal and Installation).
  3. CAUTIONS:
    • Care must be taken when remove the components not to damage the inner tie-rod. Failure to follow this instruction may result in corrosion of the inner tie-rod.

    • Make sure that the area around the component is clean and free of foreign material.

    • Note the positions of the components on removal.

    Remove the steering gear boot.
    1. Remove the smaller clamp.
    2. Remove and discard the larger Oetiker clamp.
Installation
  1. CAUTION:

    Grease must be applied to aid the installation of the steering gear boot, sealing and allowing the tie rods to rotate freely when the wheel alignment is adjusted.

    Apply a thin layer of grease to the locations indicated, use locally sourced Fuchs Renolit JP 1619, Molykote PG-65 or an equivalent of the same specification.
  2. CAUTIONS:
    • Make sure that the components are installed to the noted removal position.

    • Make sure that the area around the component is clean and free of foreign material.

    • Care must be taken when installing the components not to damage the inner tie-rod. Failure to follow this instruction may result in corrosion of the inner tie-rod.

    Install the steering gear boot.Steering gear boot kit
    1. Use Oetiker constant velocity boot clamp pliers to tighten the larger Oetiker clamp.
    2. Use suitable pliers to correctly install the smaller clamp.
  3. Install the tie rod end. For additional information, refer to: Tie Rod End (211-03 Steering Linkage, Removal and Installation).
